Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) Mission:

Siuslaw Outreach Services in a non-profit organization dedicated to assist individuals and families in leading safe, dignified and secure lives by offering a range of services from basic needs to self-empowerment.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ~ Summer 2010:

“A pessimist, they say, sees a glass of water as being half empty; an optimist sees the same glass as half full. But a giving person sees a glass of water and starts looking for someone who might be thirsty.” - G. Thomas Gale

Volunteers

This is one of my favorite quotes to describe all people who volunteer their services to help others. What would we do without all of our wonderful volunteers?

When you first walk into SOS, you are greeted with a smile from one of the volunteers who works at our front desk. That person answers the phone, pulls the client cards or helps individuals fill out a card, determines who in the office they need to see, oversees the clothing donations room, and assists all who come to our office.

We also have several ladies who come in weekly to sort through the incoming donations and keep the clothing/donations room neat and tidy. What a great help that is.

Focus 4-Crisis Hotline

It takes a very special person to be a Focus 4-Crisis Hotline phone advocate, but it is not as difficult as you might think. We give you all the training you need to help anyone who might call, but the majority of the calls come from people who want information about services that are available in the area, or who just want to talk to someone.

Once you are trained, you have a cell phone to carry with you when you are on your shift. And, you get to choose the days you want to volunteer. Maybe you only want to be on call one day a month or one weekend a month. That’s great. We could use your help. And when you talk to someone for a little bit and they say with so much sincerity, “Thank you for listening to me…” you know you’ve made someone’s day a little brighter. It feels good.

October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Right now we are also looking for people to help us plan our October Domestic Violence Awareness month activities. We’d love to have your creative ideas and help with our “Step Out Against Domestic Violence” men’s march, our art exhibit, “Empty Place” fundraising dinner, and other things we are organizing to make our community aware of the problem of domestic violence.

Who to contact to become a Volunteer

If you are interested in getting involved with SOS, give Angi, the Volunteer Coordinator, or me, a call at 997-2816. We will welcome you with open arms and a grateful heart!

Have a wonderful summer,

Bettie Egerton
Executive Director of Siuslaw Outreach Services
